Object of the Day: A Late Victorian Chest of Drawers

This walnut cabinet dates to the late Victorian era and shows the influence of Aesthetic designs on furniture-making. It’s a simple piece of furniture with sharp, fluted legs and a low backboard. The only adornment is an elegant rail at the bottom of the piece which features carving inspired by the Aesthetic Movement, comprised of a stylized pattern of flowers and a lattice-like silhouette.

The understated piece of furniture has served me well for many years. It houses(part of) my collection of DVDs and serves as a stand for the television. While this was certainly not its intended initial use, it proves, once again, that antique furnishings have infinite adaptability and versatility.
