Trick or Treat Special: The Devil Doll, 1936

Nothing starts the holiday season more than Lionel Barrymore in drag, leading a couple of murderous mutants in a quest for revenge and love. The favorite Halloween film in my household, as I mentioned in an article last year, is 1936’s The Devil Doll which was distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and directed by famed horror director Tod Browning. The film starred a cross-dressing Lionel Barrymore and, as his estranged daughter, Maureen O’Sullivan.

Sometimes it’s difficult not to save this feel-good classic for Christmas, but, it does have just the right amount of sentiment for Halloween. Check out the trailer. And, by all means, purchase the DVD to make it a permanent part of your holiday festivities.

Fun movie! I was able to see it for the first time this year and it is a perfect Halloween movie. I was tickled at how the "little people" had shadows in some scenes and then in others cast no shadow at all. But, for the time, I thought the special effects were quite good. Thanks for suggesting this movie!
