Figure of the Day: A Boy, a Girl and a Dove, 1800-1830

the V&A
Figural Group of a Boy, A Girl and a Dove
Staffordshire, England
1800-1830
The Victoria & Albert Museum

Made in Staffordshire between 1800-1830, this figural group of lead-glazed earthenware depicts a boy and a girl with a dove.  This early piece of Staffordshire porcelain predates the popular flatbacks and assorted figurines which gave the Staffordshire Porcelain Factory its enduring fame.  Despite the fact that much of the enamel is chipped or worn away, we can still see that the modeling is cruder than later works by the concern.
